ECONOMIC affairs expert and analyst, Dr Hildebrand Shayo, has called on instructors to work closely with parents and guardians to ensure that students, especially those studying economics, are guided to understand how to create their own employment opportunities, rather than pursuing education with the sole expectation of being employed after graduation.

Dr. Shayo emphasized that educators and parents share a responsibility to help students recognize the wide range of opportunities available to them, especially those they can create for themselves.

He noted that collaboration between lecturers, tutors, and parents particularly during parent teacher engagements—is essential in preparing students for self-employment and entrepreneurship.

“For students studying economics, we must go beyond teaching theory and help them understand the kinds of jobs and opportunities they can create on their own, instead of focusing only on looking for employment after school,” he said.

He further highlighted several fields within economics that offer strong potential for self-employment and innovation, including actuarial analysis, business development, management, data analysis, financial analysis, and investment analysis. According to Dr. Shayo, these areas equip graduates with practical skills that can enable them to start ventures, consult independently, or develop new business solutions.

Dr. Shayo added that early guidance from parents and teachers can help students identify and develop these pathways, ultimately contributing to a nation of skilled individuals capable of creating jobs rather than competing for limited employment opportunities.

He concluded by noting that promoting such a mindset among students is vital for national development, as it fosters economic independence, innovation, and sustainable job creation.
